This neat looking flower is sold with the name shooting star and once it flowered we could tell why.

The strong stem rises straight up from the middle of the plant and then from the top hang down many of these pretty pointed flowers.

Dodecatheon meadia
Dodecatheon meadia - red Both colors work nicely in the shade garden.  The vibrant purple flowers light up the daytime while the white flowers stand out during the early evening.

They are perfect under deciduous trees because they grow and flower in early spring.  Once they become dormant, they will tolerate the drier soil and deep shade underneath the leaf canopy.
