We planted our painted daisies, Chrysanthemum coccineum,
from seed and now have many established plants. One problem, however, was
they
flowered on long stems that became heavy from the weight of the flowers. The stems
grow out away from the foliage and sometimes fall to the ground unless
supported. We found a terrific way to display the beauty of these flowers by
allowing them to wander through a Yucca filamentosa 'Ivory Tower'
which we planted within our clump of daisies. As the plants flower, the sturdy leaves of
the yucca make an excellent support for the long painted daisy stems.
| Here you can see the flower spike of the yucca just beginning to emerge
as the daisies flower. After the painted daisies have finished, we dead-head the
plants to encourage a second blooming. While we wait for the second
set of
blossoms, we are treated to the tall flowering spike of our yucca plant. |
